I have just returned to the fold after a falling out over disco. So I have been listening to the past 10 years in 4 weeks. What a decade, I'm like a kid in a sweetie shop. What to choose? T.S.O.I.B. has my vote as it was the work that drew me back. P.S. I am beating myself up for being so stupid and missing out on so much. |

Incredibly hard choice. I think this has been Sparks' best decade yet (which is saying something!). My favourite out of these choices changes almost daily, however I went for Lil' Beethoven because they completely threw the rule book out for that album and practically created their own genre.
While the subsequent albums are all brilliantly innovative progressions, it was Lil' Beethoven that got the ball rolling. |

I can only use Aled's criterion - otherwise it's almost impossible to choose. _________________ Entertainment or art - one should know from the start |

I´d also vote for Hello Young Lovers, it has the most powerful songs on it.
Currently I am very into Exotic Creatures... and Ingmar Bergman, but I guess it´s adjusting and a phase...we´ll see what will be left. 'Photoshop' and 'I´ve never been high' will definitely stay in my toplist of songs! |

"Hello Young Lovers" is the best album of all time BY ANYONE in my humble opinion. From the moment Russell's multi tracked voice belted out "All I do now is Dick Around", like an opera chorus, I knew Sparks were playing to their musical strengths. The guitars, drums and bass really rock too amidst Ron's amazing keyboard orchestral symulations and other sounds. And every track after that just impressed me with the changes in speed. The finale, the 9 minute long, "As I Sit To Play the Organ at the Notre Dame Cathedral" urgently hauls church organ music into the post modern pop world. On first listen, I rejoiced to have finally discovered an album I could firmly say was the best ever. And, I was especially glad that it had come from my favourite band.
These are all very worthy albums in their own way, that said. |

I've voted for Balls because nobody else has! It was a toss-up between that and Exotic Creatures for me, impossible to choose between the two really as they are so very different. Both of them have more tracks on that I thoroughly enjoy listening to than any of the others on the list, so they come tops for me.
HYL doesn't really do it for me I'm afraid. Some good tracks but some that I'm not wild about and 2 that I skip because I really don't like them; I have to confess that it's one of my least-played Sparks albums. And the meowling noises on 'Here Kitty' scare my cat!
LB was, as has been observed, a ground-breaking album and without it the subsequent works would not be what they are but, although I like it, I think Exotic Creatures is better.
I don't count Ingmar Bergman. I haven't played it much, it is quite good for what it is but I fear that if I play it often I'd get fed up with it. _________________ Alison |
