I think Russell has the best voice that I have ever heard. Does anybody agree? _________________ Carol wears Cacheral..... |

Sorry, but no. As much as I adore Sparks, there are many singers with far more affecting voices than our own dear Russ. I'm sure the man himself doesn't rate himself as a better singer than Sinatra, Aretha, Bowie or Marvin Gaye...
However, I'm sure he'd be very honoured to know that somebody does! _________________ 'I don't think, therefore I ain't' |

Russell has a very beautiful voice. When I hear him singing I feel very happy. But I also like the voice of Paul McCartney a lot. And Mariska, she used to be my neighbour, but chose for a family instead of a career.^^ Well, she still singing in a choir. _________________ http://sparks.startpagina.nl

Of course, it is far from technically the best voice in music - I'm sure there are many soul divas that can lay claim to that - but yes, for me, Russell does have the best voice. No competition. No other voice has sent such shivers down my spine (and that's a good thing, in this case!).
Now, whether it's his voice alone is another matter, but in combination with Sparks at their most musically innovative (i.e., we're not talking Interior Design here), and when he is able to let rip with his falsetto, no one comes near. Not even Billy MacKenzie of the Associates, who I mention as a singer whose voice was quite similar in certain ways to Russell's. MacKenzie was technically far more gifted as a singer but, for me, Russell's still has something that voices can't quite reach.
Remove the music and, I concede, it might be a different story.
Argh, I'm tearing myself apart in debate! Still, it's too late now, I voted 'yes', and even if I could change my mind, I'm sticking with it! It has to be about gut feeling! The heart! Your head might know he's technically not the best, but forget the head: our man's got the bestest voice in pop! |

For Sparks songs, he has the perfect voice. It fits exactly and is one of the things that makes Sparks songs so unique and exciting.
But best voice ever? No... a great vocalist would be good with any song, and as good as Russell is, there are other who are better at that. |

I voted 'yes'. Despite his impressive vocal range, Russell may not have the 'best' singing voice ever, but there is an undefinable and unique quality to his voice, not only when he is singing but also when he is speaking. A combination perhaps of tone, accent and (rather individual) pronunciation, but whatever it is I find it irresistable. Never experience this with any other singer. |

Lets ask whether he has the worst voice - then you all will reply the same , namely 'no' , no doubt ;) _________________ (bows) |

Then you've never heard Paul Heaton.
Heaton, Bing Crosby, Chet Baker, and Moz all have more appealing and expressive voices. Russell's pipes are great, of course, and I wouldn't want anyone else singing songs like "Suzie Safety" and "Tits", but there are certain emotional states (indignation, despair, vengence) which he just does not render all that well.
Worst voices:
Nick Dreck
Robert Plant
Dave Matthews
Robert Pollard and Stephin Merritt have very appealing voices, as well.

Jon Anderson is pretty weak comparing to Russell, as well as Bowie is. Really. Listen to Ashes To Ashes - this is, you know, scream and moan music, he just can sing in lower key better, deeper.
Carl Palmer might have become a good Russell imitator, his voice'd allow him to do that :) |

Russell has a very unique and distinctive voice and in my opinion, he is certainly one of the best singers I have ever heard. Also he is one of the very few who sound just as good live as on a recording.
Whilst there are other good voices out there, they don't bring me out in goosebumps quite like Russell's voice does. _________________ Carol wears Cacheral..... |

Just as an agreement with most of what has already been stated by almost everybody...Russell has a great voice,as do other singers..certain songs by Sparks also give me goosebumps(maybe for different reasons than Cali....lol)the music and lyrics combined with "the voice"...all work well.
Other singers have "unique" voices...and sing songs which suit their style with as much aplomb..but Russ, best voice in the universe or not...would still get my vote!!
PS;how pleasing to see a post from my birthplace(stamping ground)...ah not like the old days when I was the only Dundonian Sparks' fan...lol |

He certainly has the most original way of pronouncing certain words. He has a blend of LA, the Southern US and the UK. His singing is in a class by itself, which I may add is a classy class. However to hear him speak just as Russell...now that is smooth. |

Certainly one of the best ones I’ve heard. :) Maybe technically not the best one in the world, but who cares? ;) It’s the one right up to my own heart, and all the technical things don’t matter. |
