One of the best voices, for me. It makes me feel somewhat... comfortable. Though not extraordinary but amazing timbre, you can never get tired of it.
BTW, when I first heard Sparks the very first thing that attracted my attention was the voice. |

Can't add much that hasn't been said about Russell's voice, so I'll add to the great voices list.
I wish I could sound like (and switch between) Sting and Barry White. Freddie Mercury is great as well. _________________ - Inspector Muffin

He's certainly up there with Bowie. Russell can still hit the high notes live as well which is brilliant at his age. I guess he never took up the ciggies.

Without quetion, Russell has the best voice ever (but then I am biased, lol).
I think Andy Bell from Erasure has a great singing voice as well. As for female artists, Barbara Steisand has to be top of the poll, and I really love the Swedish pop diva, Robyn's voice too. And many others, too numerous to mention. _________________ "I hope it's just your laugh that is infectious."

Andy Bell has a great range in his voice. I think Tom Chaplin of Keane has a great voice too. Russell has amazing dexterity to be able to sing words so fast but clearly. eg. Something For The Girl With Everything, Propaganda/At Home At Work At Play, Dick Around _________________ Gonna hang myself from my family tree. |

Russell has a great voice,
But no one beats in my opinion, marc almonds voice, he is my favorite singer.
People mentioned here andy bell, that I agree he is a great singer too.
I am probably attracted more to singers with low voices.
morten harket was also mentioned here, and I agree that he has a great voice.
(I was a big a-ha fan as a child, and I think that its a very interesting choice to mention him :))
morten is also very good at the high notes, like Russell.
Another great voice belongs to midge ure from ultravox.
But russells voice is more unique than all the others I mentioned here, that’s for sure. _________________ life isn't much, but there's nothing else to do. |

Yes, Russell deserves the best singer ever title. Especially after 21x21. There were some songs that I'd heard on CD that I thought would be impossible to pull off live. Time after time, he astonished me. Of course, it couldn't be perfect on every note on every one of the 250+ songs. So many were written by the hand malevolent looking brother who remains openly unsympathetic to the vocal gymnastics involved!!
Unique is indeed the right word for Russell. Meandering through Sparks colourful collection of albums and their countless phases, it becomes apparent that Russell uses quite a range of vocal styles and personas. Yet all are unmistakably Russell. He is blessed with a natural tone which has a sort of boy-next-door appeal. Its got that sense of beautiful innocence that Roy Orbison could give to his fine songs. At the same time, its just edgy though to enough excite a sense of mischief, and escalate into operatic anguish amist thunderous drums, crashing guitars and heaving organs. (oh no, don't tell me I've finished on another rude sounding phrase) |

yes! this is exactly what i was saying, that andy bell sings low, so this is one of the reasons that make me like his voice. _________________ life isn't much, but there's nothing else to do. |

the best singer ever is a tricky one but russells vocal range puts him up there with the best,to hear him still hitting those high notes as perfect as he did in the seventies is amazing,i dont think any other singer could do that like russell has done..a legend
corina, you are right about andy bell xx _________________ WRITTEN OF COURSE BY THE MIGHTIEST HAND |

He's certainly one of the best.
But the best voice ever belonged to Freddie Mercury. |

I may have posted something along these lines a few pages back,but....
vocal talent is often limited to the style of song being sung.....Elvis singing "In The Ghetto"...incredible...Some Roy Orbison tracks...also incredible...ditto Jesse Malins...Jeff Buckley and so on and so on....though I do admit it was Russell's This Town that got me into Sparks(after hearing it on the radio)and caused me to stick with Sparks after some 35 years...I think his versatility is amazing(as well as his range and durability as proven by 21x21...I still think this should be in some record books or hall of fame...)few singers of any calibre can equate...whether or not some vocals by other artists are better???Well horses for courses.
I for one could never explain why I prefer Hank Williams singing "Your Cheatin' Heart " over Chet Atkins.
In the meantime we have a singer par excellence...lets be happy!! |
